Why a Ground Source Heat Pump?

Ground source heat pumps are best-suited as a solution for medium to large properties, and those without ease of access to main utilities. Being primarily underground, ground source heat pumps are virtually invisible once fitted, silent in operation and very cost effective to run.

Is a Ground Source Heat Pump Right for Your Property?

GSHPs are one of the most efficient low-carbon heating systems available, but they are not suitable to every property. Because they extract renewable heat from the ground through buried pipework, they typically require sufficient outdoor space and the right site conditions to install the ground loop system.

For the right property, however, a ground source heat pump can deliver highly efficient, reliable heating and hot water all year round, while significantly reducing carbon emissions.

Properties Well-Suited to GSHPs Include:

Homes with available outdoor land

Ground source systems require underground pipework to collect heat from the ground. This can be installed as horizontal ground loops (which need garden or land space) or vertical boreholes where space is more limited.

Rural or off-grid properties

Homes that currently rely on oil, LPG or electric heating often see the biggest benefits from switching to a ground source heat pump.

Larger homes or properties with higher heating demand

Ground source heat pumps operate very efficiently when supplying consistent heating, making them particularly effective in larger homes.

Well-insulated buildings

Like all heat pump systems, GSHPs perform best in properties with good insultation and modern heating distribution systems, such as underfloor heating or appropriately sized radiators.

New builds or major renovations

Ground source systems are often easiest to install during new construction or significant renovation projects when groundworks and heating systems are already being designed.

When Installed Correctly, GSHP Can Provide:

  • Highly efficient low-carbon heating
  • Lower long-term energy costs
  • Stable performance regardless of outdoor air temperature
  • A heating system with a lifespan of 20-25+ years

At VIA Energy, we carry out a full site assessment to determine whether a ground source heat pump is the right solution for your property, and to design a system that delivers the best performance and efficiency.

BUS Scheme Eligibility

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a UK government initiative designed to help homeowners switch from fossil fuel heating systems to low-carbon alternatives such as ground source heat pumps. The scheme provides a grant to reduce the upfront cost of installing renewable heating in your property.

Under the BUS Scheme, eligible households can receive a £7,500 grant towards the installation of a ground source heat pump. The grant is applied directly to the installation cost, making it significantly more affordable to upgrade to a highly efficient, low-carbon heating system.

To qualify, the property must generally be located in England or Wales, have a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) with no outstanding insulation recommendations, and the system must be installed by an MSC-certified installer.

At VIA Energy, we guide our customers through the entire process, including applying for the BUS grant on your behalf. Our experienced team ensures your system is designed and installed to meet all scheme requirements, helping you take full advantage of the financial support available when installing a ground source heat pump.

Testimonials from Satisfied North Devon Customers

“We wanted to cut our grid us toas low as possible with solar, batteries and an air source heat pump. Although the installation happened in the middle of winter we have been very pleased with the outcome. The pipework is as tidy as I have seen anyone do. Very happy to recommend Via Energy who did a great job for us.” – Steve Bunce

“These guys are great. Always turn up when they say, do a good job and leave things tidy.”– Lisa Abrey
